DCA systems' drilling optimization program is built on decades of global experience in drilling and mining. It is designed to meet the needs of
drilling contractors and mining houses.
DCA drilling optimization program is a comprehensive program that looks at drilling and the related operations from a number of perspectives to offer the best solutions to your specific challenges.
Every drilling operation is different. The process below shows the areas we typically evaluate, but the priorities, targets and implementation plan are always defined site by site.
We offer a detailed process structure for formulating an appropriate drilling optimization plan. As every drilling site faces different challenges, we keep our evaluations and solutions flexible. Generally, our evaluation follows this program:

We start with a 3-to-5-day mining/drilling site evaluation to understand the job and the structure of operations. In this time, we evaluate the knowledge and skills of people in following positions:
We look into any drilling challenges related to:
We meet separately with mechanical and operational teams to discuss the main issues as seen by site personnel.
Understanding the views of site personnel — and why certain situations have developed — is an important part of our evaluation. We give this background context significant weight when assessing the operation.
We take a broad look around the mining operation to gain insight into the locations, the specific geological challenges of different pits and the working environments.
We observe staff in priority areas, their techniques, and ways of working to gain some insight into their knowledge of the drill rig, its control systems and drilling best practices
We take mechanical tours of workshop conditions, tooling available and questions to understand general knowledge and abilities.
DCA identifies the problems, explains what is causing them, highlights the priority areas and recommends the actions that should have the biggest impact.
We assess how departments relate and interact to ensure a flowing process that keeps drill rigs drilling.
We assess knowledge of different topics including safety, drill rigs, drilling, GUI, rock tools management, planning and monitoring, morning meeting structure, and content and drill bench management.
We observe specific critical areas which contribute to high drilling costs:
We analyse historical data and current wear patterns on drilling consumables to identify operating pressures and techniques that reduce consumable service life
The mechanical department has a major impact on drilling outcomes. We investigate critical areas and look for opportunities to develop staff and provide them with the right tooling and knowledge.
We pay attention to:
There are numerous general factors that influence drilling outcomes that need to be considered. The factors that matter most vary considerably from site to site.
Typical areas we investigate include:
Based on the audit, we identify the critical areas where performance is being lost, highlight the changes likely to have the greatest impact on operational efficiency, and develop a broader improvement plan.
After submitting the initial site report, we discuss the findings with you and agree on the actions required to achieve the targets. These may include:
An 18-month project was initiated after a two-day site evaluation.
The drilling optimization project included, for example, a training and support program for drill rig operators, offsiders, supervisors & leading hands, mechanics with rock tools and drill bit management programs.
DCA provided the tools needed to structure and document the training program, including evaluation matrices to establish a baseline, training workbooks, and records covering theory training, practical training, consolidation and assessment.
Sandvik DPI simulator training was also included.
